My Broker saved me money - do I still have a claim?
Absolutely! In many cases a broker can save you money because you were on a high-cost contract previously, but this still doesn't mean that they've not earned a substantial amount of hidden commission from providers. We see this quite often, but it doesn't determine if you have a claim or not
But the Broker is a business too - isn't this just how they earn money?
Of course! Energy Brokers are legitimate businesses and should rightfully be paid for their services, however they are generally paid by suppliers based on how much margin they've added to your rates. IFAs and Insurance Brokers have seen rule changes to ensure transparency exists, but the same rules don't apply in the energy industry.
We checked everything - we can't have been mis-sold to!
Unfortunately, that's part of the problem. Because of the way these deals have ben constructed - you just get presented with an overall cost per kWh - even the most astute business leaders wouldn't spot the hidden commission. it's the dishonest and misleading nature of these deals that we really object to.
Why doesn't the Regulator step in?
In an ideal world they would, but unfortunately Energy Brokers aren't regulated, which means OFGEM have no powers to address the issue. We will continue to be a prominent voice in the market place pushing for enforcement, but in the meantime are committed to reclaiming financial redress for impacted businesses who have been mis-sold to.
Why is the Contract Term so important?
Brokers often persuade clients to take longer-term contracts, claiming that this protects you if the market rate changes. Whilst there's some truth here, in reality Brokers are motivated to sell these contracts because the longer the arrangement lasts, the more commission they earn.
If they haven't told me how much they earn, it can't be much?
That could be the case, and it's a common perception, however we see average claim amounts well in excess of £20,000 and often significantly higher. Even clients that think they've got the strongest relationships with their Energy Broker are usually astonished to see the truth extent of hidden commission payments of their energy contracts.
